The Internal Medicine Residency Program is an innovative program that incorporates both inpatient and outpatient medicine experiences, as well as many sub-specialty rotations into a dynamic education process. Joseph Weigel, MD, MACP - Program Director

Dr. Joseph Weigel is a nearly lifelong resident of Somerset and Pulaski County, Kentucky. After graduating from Somerset High School, he attended the University of Louisville, where he graduated with honors with a BS in Biology.  In 1981, Dr. Weigel graduated with honors from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he was also elected to Alpha Omega Alpha.

After earning his medical degree, Dr. Weigel completed his residency training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and returned to Somerset in early 1985, where he joined the practice of Lake Cumberland Medical Associates and remains in the practice of General Internal Medicine. For the first several years, he was fortunate enough to practice with his father, who preceded him as a General Internist in Somerset.

Dr. Weigel is a career-long member of the American College of Physicians, attaining Mastership in 2014.  He served as Governor of the Kentucky Chapter between 1998 and 2002, and is also a Chapter Laureate Awardee.  Dr. Weigel has also served Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital as Chief of the Medicine Service and Chief of the Medical Staff.

Dr. Weigel is passionate about the excellence of this program, and is intent on making this the best possible learning experience it can be for aspiring physicians.


Reaford Blackburn, Jr., MD - Associate Program Director

Dr. Reaford Blackburn is a Kentucky native, born and raised in Pikeville, KY. After graduating from East Ridge High School, he attended Alice Lloyd College where he graduated valedictorian with a BS in Biology.  In 2012, Dr. Blackburn graduated summa cum laude from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he was also elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. 

After earning his medical degree, Dr. Blackburn completed his residency training and time as Chief Medical Resident at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and settled in Somerset in 2016, where he joined the Apogee hospitalist group. He is fortunate to practice medicine alongside his wife, who is also a hospitalist at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Dr. Blackburn is a member of the American College of Physicians. He has served as a Waxman Scholar at ACP and regularly attends national meetings devoted to furthering academic medicine.

Dr. Blackburn is passionate about resident education with a focus on inpatient bedside teaching, procedural teaching and point of care ultrasound.

In his free time, Dr. Blackburn and his wife enjoy time with their three dogs. He also enjoys bass fishing, time outdoors, and spending time with friends.

2021-2022 Third-Year Residents:

Michael Baker, MD 

Dr. Michael Baker is a native of Lexington, Kentucky. He completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Baker completed medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. 

Dr. Baker joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to pursue hospital medicine. In his free time, Dr. Baker enjoys playing the guitar, reading, exercising and being outdoors. 



 

Jeffrey Burton, DO 

Dr. Jeffrey Burton is a native of Naperville, Illinois. He completed his undergraduate studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Dr. Burton completed medical school at The University of Pikeville- Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Burton  joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to pursue a fellowship and work in a community hospital. In his free time, Dr. Burton enjoys watching movies, exercising and spending time with friends and family. 

Marvin Cuevas, DO 

Dr. Marvin Cuevas is a native of Wiggins, Missouri. He completed undergraduate studies at Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas. Dr. Cuevas completed medical school at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lynchburg, Virginia. 

Dr. Cuevas joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to pursue hospital medicine. In his free time, Dr. Cuevas enjoys spending time with his wife and children, golfing, fishing and hunting.  
 

Joshua Holt, DO 

Dr. Joshua Holt is a native of Liberty, Kentucky. He completed his undergraduate studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Dr. Holt completed medical school at The University of Pikeville- Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Holt  joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to practice hospital medicine in Kentucky. In his free time, Dr. Holt enjoys playing drums, fixing things, building Lego sets, and spending time with his wife and two children (who sometimes get to play with Legos, too). 



 

Jordan Laferty, MD 

Dr. Jordan Laferty is from Louisville, Kentucky. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Dr. Laferty completed medical school at St. George's University School of Medicine in West Indies, Grenada

Dr. Laferty joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to pursue a fewllowship in Hematology and Oncology and practice within that field. Dr. Laferty considers himself a "University of Kentucky Wildcats Basketall enthusiast." He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, reading, watching his favorite shows on Hulu or Netflix, and playing video games. 

Sarah Mills, DO 

Dr. Sarah Mills is a native of Barbourville, Kentucky. She completed undergraduate studies at Union College in Barbourville. Dr. Mills completed medical school at Lincoln Memorial University- DeBusck College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee. 

Dr. Mills joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to pursue Internal Medicine in underserved areas, both in the U.S. and abroad. In her free time, Dr. Mills enjoys traveling, kayaking, swimming, hiking, playing the piano, and spending time with friends and family. 

Stephen Voss, DO 

Dr. Stephen Voss is a native of Fruithurst, Alabama. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Voss completed medical school at Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dothan, Alabama. 

Dr. Voss joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program to pursue a fellowship in pulmonary/critical care medicine. In his free time, Dr. Voss enjoys golfing, cycling, Classic BMWs, and Auburn Athletics. 


2021-2022 Second -Year Residents:

Taylor Billings, DO 

Dr. Taylor Billings is a native of Henderson, Kentucky. He completed his undergraduate degree at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He completed his medical degree at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Billings joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with an interest in pursuing Emergency Medicine. In his free time, Dr. Billings enjoys spending time with friends and family, going to the lake, and traveling. 



 

Paul Henley, MD

Dr. Paul Henley is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee. He completed his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. He completed his medical degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Henley joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with interest in pursuing cardiology or hospital medicine. In his free time, Dr. Henley likes to play and watch sports and spend time with his family. 

Sergeine Lezeau, DO 

Dr. Sergeine Lezeau is a native of Port St. Lucia, Florida. She completed her undegraduate degree at the University of Florida in Gainseville, Florida. She completed her medical degree at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Auburn in Alabama. 

Dr. Lezeau joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with the goal of becoming a hospitalist and later tranistioning into private practice. She was motivated to become a doctor by the fact that she can blend all of her passsions and interests as a leader, teacher, mentor, advocate, and volunteer. In her free time, Dr. Lezeau enjoys shopping, playing piano, salsa dancing, traveling, editing, mentoring, and volunteering. 

Kylie Rice, DO 

Dr. Kylie Rice is a native of Ashland, Kentucky. She completed her undegraduate degree in Biology and Biblical Studies at Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Kentucky. She completed her medical degree at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Dr. Rice joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with the goal of returning home to practie medicine as well as pursuing medical missions in Africa. In her free time, Dr. Rice enjoys volleyball, hiking, pickleball, and yoga. 

Johnny Soter, MD 

Dr. Johnny Soter is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah. He completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Dr. Soter completed medical school at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. 

Dr. Soter joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program in order to pursue his goals of becoming a hospitalist specializing in critical care. In his free time, Dr. Soter enjoys playing basketball, biking, hiking, spending time with his family, friends and his dog, Charles. 

Brandon Thomas, DO 

Dr. Brandon Thomas is originally from Phoenix, Arizona. He completed his undergraduate studies at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. He attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennslyvania. 

Dr. Thomas joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with the goals of bringing evidence-based medicine and strong critical thinking skills into practice and providing the medical attention his community deserves. In his free time, Dr. Thomas loves to be out in nature. He enjoys hiking, road trips and kayaking. If he is not outside, he likes to read books and spend time with his cat. 


2021-2022 First -Year Residents:

Shaelyn Dixon, DO 

Dr. Shaelyn Dixon is a native of Hazard, Kentucky. She completed her undegraduate degree as Co-Valedictorian with a BS in Biology and minor in Chemistry and Religion at the University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky. She completed medical school at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Dr. Dixon joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with the hopes of one day practicing as a hospitalist in a rural setting. She genuinely loves people and wants to provide evidence based medical care to allow her patients to have a long healthy life and spend more time with those they love. In her free time, Dr. Dixon loves spending time with her husband, dog, family and friends. She enjoys going to Church, reading fiction books and watching movies. 

Maha Husain, MD  

Dr. Maha Husain is a native of Plano, Texas. She completed medical school at Dow International Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. 

Dr. Husain joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with the goal of becoming a competent internal medicine physician and finds motivation in the trust and faith that her patients have in her to help them along their health journey. In her free time, Dr. Husain enjoys baking chocolate chip cookies, playing basketball and volleyball. 

Madiha Jilani, MD

Dr. Madiha Jilani was born in Pakistan and raised in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her undegraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery in Karachi, Pakistand. She completed medical school at Ziauddin University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. 

Dr. Jilani joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program as becoming a doctor is in her family and she knows the appreciation and respect this profession brings. She believes being a doctor has the power to bring a change in someone's life and it gives her immense satisfaction to be in a place where she can be the cause of that positive change. In her free time, Dr. Jilani loves cooking Pakistani/Indian food and enjoys spending quality time with her husband and kids which includes painting, playing video games and traveling. 

Autumn Justice, DO 

Dr. Autumn Justice is a native of Russell Springs, Kentucky. She completed her undergraduate degree at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky with a BSN and minor in Chemistry. Dr. Justice attended medical school at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, West Virginia. 

Dr. Justice joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program with an interst in both inpatient and outpatient medicine. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family. 

Kathryn Knutson, DO 

Dr. Kathryn Knutson is a native of Granger, Indiana. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She completed medical school at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Dr. Knutson joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Residency Program as she is interested in both inpatient and outpatient medicine and one day hopes to teach her patients self-confidence and skills to improve their own health. Dr. Knutson has wanted to be a physician since a very young age and credits her motivation to her family and friends who push her to be a better person and achieve her goals. In her free time, Dr. Knutson enjoys walking her greyhound, making new recipes with her husband, watching sporting events, and staying active with indoor cycling and hiking. 

Diep "Chrystie" Nguyen-Young, DO 

Dr. Chrystie Nguyen-Young is orginally from Blacksburg, Virginia. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virgina in Charlottesville, Virginia with a B.A. in Biology and a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Nguyen-Young attended medical school at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Nguyen-Young joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program in July 2021. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, outdoor activities and watching reality TV shows. 

Fletcher Young, DO 

Dr. Fletcher Younge is orginally from Bowling Green, Kentucky. He completed his undergradute studies at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky with a B.S. in Physics and a Masters in Business Administration. Dr. Young attended medical school at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Young joined the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program with the goal of one day working and providing medical care in the same hospital as his wife. In his free time, he loves to read science-fiction and fantasy and write.
